If there was one pioneer in the Japanese Pinstriping / Kustom scene, most of the people would agree on saying WILDMAN Ishii. But he is only well known in his way of pinstriping, and his statue. No on really knows the mysterious side of him.

++ WILDMAN likes "Cartoon Heroes" ? ++
Shogo(S from now):First and foremost, I would like to ask you.... Did you always like drawing?
Wildman Ishii(W from now):Hmm..Yeh I guess, had nothing better to do.
S :I guess pictures of cars?
W:Cars and Trains. Well I'm no Train Maniac though.
S :There seem to be a lot of car lovers, lovings trains.

W:Most of them seem to, except hide it.
S :Do you collect novelty items too?
W:No train items but I do collect miniature cars.
S :Miniature Cars eh?
W:Ever since my childhood days.
S :Did you only draw inanimate objects, and no humans?
W:When I was little, I reckon I drew some heroes, but mainly cars and motorbikes.
S :Have you always liked Motorcycles?
W:I always liked the sidecar idea when I was little.
S :Ki - Kai - Da (*1) must of influenced you.
W:Must Be.
S :Your Mach 1 is too. (W's car)
W:And might have something to do with Mach 7.
S :Who?
W:Hahaha,...
S :That used to be a cartoon, wasn't it?
W: Yep, they Also did a movie of it.
S :Didn't know that. Must be from them then.

*1: Ki - Kai - Da and Mach 1 were Cartoon Hero programs broadcasted in Japan.

-My Dark Ages?-
S :Did you recieve lots of awards in school?
W:Not awards, but did get some what good grades.
S: Cool!
W:But that was it, I was a horrid Maths student,
S :Not just arts?
W:Like you know, the 3d Modelings.
S :Yes,
W:I used to use the Metro Buses as motifs.
S :Are any of those left somewhere?
W:Nah I think they all went in the bin.
S :No photos you kept or...
W:It would be great if I did, but nah.
S When you were in Junior High and Highschool, were you in the Art Clubs and stuff?
W:Nope, just liked to draw and stuff but no clubs, also I didn't get along with the teachers that much either.
S :Heheehe.
W:When in 7th, 8th grade, I used to tick the teacher off because I only drew cars, and he was one of those old geezer teachers.
S :I see
W:Finally when I was a Freshman, I clicked with the teacher, and it was great.
S :Maybe he liked cars.
W:I think it was more of the age thing. Like the previous geezer really was the race horse type. He just liked to take things the good old way.
S :So if he was a geezer when you were in Junior Highschool, he must be 90 by now.
W:Its been atleast 20 years...
S :I guess he just didn't like English overall.
W:English as in like designing terms you know.

-Cartoons and Baseball-
S :Didn't you ever want to become a cartoonist?
W:I liked cartoons but I'm no freak !!!
S :(Laugh)
W:Drew some in School.
S :Any of those left?
W:Nah, They were on scrap paper. Baseball Cartoons.
S :Baseball Cartoons?
W:I liked Baseball
S :To play?
W:When I was little, but watching pros mainly.
S :Like Oh, and Nagashima.
W:I was anti-Giants though.
S :Anti-Giants?
W:My Dad was always a Taiyo Whales fan. Was extatic when they won 4 years ago
S :I bet.
W:And last year they were last place.
S :(Laugh)
W:But that's the way its supposed to be.
S :If you say so.
W:It's funner cheering a weak team.
S :I guess lady victory didn't shine on the Whales
W:Yokohama is better without any starts.
S :I only know Tashiro
W:Thats the guy that looked like a homebase.
S :Yep
W:Something like that.
S :I still got an autograph I got in Kawasaki
S :Kawasaki?
W:Taiyo used to be in Kawasaki.
S :So you didn't want to go into the Cartoon industry?
W:Nah, I found my virtues somewhere else
S :Oh ok.
W:I'd run out of ideas.
S :I bet you couldn't do the newspaper comics.
W:Nope.
S :But you are drawing things everyday anyways.
W:But this and that are 2 different things.

-Tennis Boy-
S :Did you draw in Highschool?
W:Nah, not in Highschool.
S :Then what were you doing?
W:I was a tennis boy.
S :Soft?

W:Hard.
S :Thank god you didn't break something back then or else MOON woudln't of had you today.
W:It was hip back then, in the early 80s.
S :Oh John Borg?
W:and Jimmy Connors, and stuff.
S :Tacchini Right?
W:Tennis was the thing in Japan.

Kid Rocker(K):I was just born!
W:Then you don't know Pink Lady!
S :Huh?

S :How bout Vocational School?
W:Went straight into the Sign Board business.
S :Do you like lettering more than pictures
W:I used to like pictures but lettering is just so much fun.
S :Ever since JH?
W:Designing the Alphabet was just too good.
S :interesting...
W:Looked at different articles on vanning and stuff for ideas.
S :Popeye the magazine came out when you were in JH.
W:I was a 6th grader, and I have all of them upto 200.
S :Cool!
W:Shige-san is more of the age.
S :So if you didn't meet the teacher, you wouldn't of been a pinstriper maybe.
W:But I did.
S :HS wasn't so fun?
W:HS was good cuz I had a lot of good points in Art.
S :Is your report card still around?
W:I don't remember. all I remember is Tennis !

-The Poster Boy-
S :While lettering for fun, you decided to go into the poster, ad, signboard business.
W:Yep
S :About 5 years in the business?
W:Yep., about 5 years.
S :Could you of continued?
W:Yes I could of, but by then most signboard businesses were going out of business.
S :Oh really?
W:Everything is done by computers now a days.
S :So I guess all that's left are old people.
W:Most are retired, and any left are using generated cutting sheets.
S :With computers.
W:It's cheaper, faster, I guess that's mass productive.
S :They just seem so cheap though.
W:But most people now a days like it cheap.
S :I guess. But some must want real paintings though.
W:There must be, especially for cars.
S :How 'bout the Bread trucks?
W:Those are all sheets.
S :So if I scratch them, will they peel?
W:They will.
K :That's good 'cus its easy to interchange them.
W:So again, it's cheaper, and easier, and faster.
S :Were you an apprentice?
W:No, no no. But was taught to steal skills
S :That's the way.
W:Especially the guys that painted the Movie Signs
S :That must be a lot of work.
W:Yeah, no kidding.
S :Did you have a Master?
W:No but was surprised by this guy who
S :surprised?
W:just got a pen and did lettering.
S :Yes,
W:Without measuring or anything.
S :That's how we feel when we see you stripe.
W:Something Like That

-Shige san, my master-
S :You tried to go into the ad art business when MOONEYES in Motomachi opened in 86 and you joined in 89, 3 years huh.
W:Yes. Shopped there three years.
S :I thought you joined immediately.
W:no no no no.
S :And one day Shige - san asked you to pinstripe.
W:Just a bit though, helping here and there.
S :Were you actually pinstriping then?
W:Yeh, a little, but thought damn this is hard.
S :How did your pinstriping life come about?
W:Shige - san first was the one who wanted to pinstripe. He even gave me his favorite brush.
S :Gee....
W:Yep, his brush.
S :Realy?
W:He gave it to me.

S :No way, really?
W:He was like, here use this, it's a present.
S :Still have it?
W:Maybe if I look hard enough. It's old and ragged since it was the one I practiced with.
S :Is it one old Mack Brush?
W:Yep, but it's all the same.
S :It must be a vintage.
W:Nah.
S :How about the end point colors?
W:Uhm, it might of been different.
S :Hey you might of had a treasure!

-Joining MOONEYES-
W:When I was still a poster boy, I was starting to paint cars, lettering wise.
S :Cars?
W:Yeh for about 5 years, I was painting cars, and one day Shige san, asked me to paint for him!
S :That must of been great timing!
W:Yeh it was wonderous timing. but I was a little surprised when he called me at work.
S :Yeh I agree. To work?
W:Yep, no cell phones back then.
S :And when you went?
W:"Would you like to pinstripe to become a millionare?" was what he said.
W、S、K :(Laugh)
S :Incredible statement isn't it?
W:"You can become a millionare easily, since no one's pinstriped here yet." and that's what got me.
K :I only got the millionare part.
W:Took me 2 weeks to think it over.
S :Must of been an easy choice.
W:Yeh something like that.
S :Do you remember your first job?
W:First I was put in the parcels division.
S、K :(Laugh)
W:I also drew price cards for Motomachi.

Drawing on an old Moon show window.

-Concentration-
S :What was your first car paint job?
W:it was the Magic of the Blue, a CROWN pickup.
S :The one with the Blue line?
W:Yep that's it!
S :You were practicing on your cars before that?
W:Yep, I painted on the Subaru, when it was yellow.
S :Were you shaking?
W:I used to do the signboards so, no shakes.
S :You must of had a lot of concentration from when you were born to do all that.
K :You never seem to be concentrating.
W:My arms are, but not my head.
S :Like you're somewhere else?
W:Yes sometimes. Like how much should I bid,
S :Net Auctions?!
W:Or like, my team's losing 5 in a row,...
S :How can you do that?
W:At first, I couldn't but as I practiced, I can do it now.
K :Other pinstripers can't do that, I've seen.
W:That I picked up when talking to customers at shows, while pinstriping.
S :So at shows eh?

-Aoki san-

S :So you were the Pioneer.
W:There must of been guys who airbrushed thing before me though.
S :For example?
W:There once was this Aoki san, at Blue Auto.
S :and...
W:He is the pioneer of airbrushing in Japan. He also did some striping on the side.
S How about now?
W:I doubt he's still doing so.
S :That's a pity.

W:I used to put flames into bicycles.
S :Like shopping bikes?
W:Like kid's bikes.
S :Oh really?
W:I called it the Sweet Machine, and it was Rad.
S :Is that still around?
W:Nope. But was influenced heavily by Aoki san.
S :How many colors were there?
W:The bike was blue, but on the chrome had red and yellow flares and stuff.

-Previous Cars-
S :So when did you start liking the GT350?
W:It was just that I liked the Mustang basically.
S :You like the cobra?
W:No no, I like the 69 Mach 1 with the big block 428 Cobra Jet engine in it.
S :(Laugh)
W:And one day it became available cheap.
S :So you rode it for?
W:4 or 5 years.
S :Oh really?
W:yup., from 87-91, 5 years.

S :That long?
W:5 years, and it was falling apart.
S :Were you on any Japanese cars?
W:Yeh, I wanted a 5MT car with some speed though. The One-box Revolution hadn't started yet.

'

S :So from Corolla to Mustang,
W:Skyline GTR
S :Oh yeah.
W:And the Daihatsu Fello
S :You like the small ones and the fast ones don't you?
W:Polar opposites.
S :Was the GTR an R32?

W:When I first saw it I just wanted to buy it.
S :So you did.
W:Immediately

S :Did you sell the GTR and the Fello at the sametime?
W:The Fello didn't cost any money to keep so I rode it down until it died one day.
S :Oh.
W:It died right before I bought the GTR.
S :So It never saw the GTR,
W:Nope

S :So you had a GTR and a Bike.
W:Yep. The GTR could go anywhere.
S :Cool
W:That was one hell of a High performance car. I didn't think it would go that fast.
S :I've never been on one but is it very fast?
W:It's speechlessly fast.
S :That must of been cool.
W:It was just one hell of a fast car.
S
:How long were you on that one?
W:Four years?
S :What was the reason for going back to a GT350?
W:I thought 5 years on the R32 would be enough.
S :Any pinstripes on the R32?
W:No, just Chrome Rims.
S :Didn't people be surprised when you rolled in with a R32?
W:I never used it for work, but did drive the 360 sometimes.
S :The GT-R and the 360 at the sametime eh?
W:Yep a 260 and 20 HP vehicle at once.
S :That's after the FELLO died,
W:I told Shige-san to sell me the 360.
S :Was it always like that?
W:No I tweaked it after I bought it.

-GT350-
S :You were searching for the GT350 at the sametime?
W:No it just suddenly cam upon me, I just suddenly wanted to have it, and I really wanted that car.
S :Oh really? and in Japan?
W:Yep, found it in Japan and got a 3 year JCI too.
S :It wasn't registered?
W:It was imported, and no one wanted such car.
S :You just couldn't forget it could you.
W:65, 6 is the best, the preceding one I had was a 68 and just fell in love with the shape and all.
S :Oh that's cool.
W:Also my previous one was an AT so...
S :So...
W:I wanted a MT so bad.
S :But I hear the clutch is very heavy.
W:Well most US cars seem to be that way.
S :How is it now?
W:Now its fine, Or I got used to it, one or the other.
S :So you're happy with the two?
W:Yep I'm happy.
S :Maybe you'd want a R32 now?
W:Nah, I don't think so.
S :Oh ok.
W:Yeh ok.
