Santa Maria

I went to Santa Maria for the first time. It was actually 2 weekends in a row.

The first time was on 5/16 (Saturday) for a bike event. Chica of Chica Custom called me up and asked, “Wanna come?” So, I left Mooneyes at 10AM and it took about 1 hour just to reach Downtown LA. Jumped on 101, then Ventura, passed Santa Barbara and by the time I got around to the place it was 2PM. It’s about 200 miles away and normally takes about 3 hours, but today too 4 hours!

Anyway, it was extremely congested and I was already wore out. When I got inside the event area everyone seemed to have a lot of free time. Chica was practicing soccer and Cole was taking a nap.

But that is the general mood of this event. I was worried about the traffic going back so I stayed less than 1 hour. Left the event at around 3:30PM and made it home by 8:00PM, this time it took 4.5 hours! Why did I even go!? I couldn’t take it!

That was my thought and 1 week later on 5/23 (Saturday), of course this was during Memorial Weekend, the first of a 3 Day Holiday in the US, of all days. I didn’t want to go through the traffic pains again so this time I left Newport Beach at 5:00AM, thinking 3 hours would be easy this early. Taking #405 all the way but right around Santa Monica it’s bumper to bumper traffic!

Creeping along I finally get to the source, on the right side of the freeway is a single car accident.

This person had a little fender-bender.

After that there were no other accidents all the way through Ventura, then I started to see a lot of cars cruising a slow speeds towards the event area.

I made it to the event area by 8:00AM as planned, 230 miles (370km) in 3 hours is a good pace.
It was only 8AM but the MOONEYES Booth was setup and already done.

I helped out at the booth and so many people stopped by to visit.

Thinking I’d like to reach home by 10:00PM, I left the event are about 6:00PM and headed straight for Newport Beach. As I left, the city looked like this.

Ventura
The Ventura sign meant I was half way there.

Every time, including this passed time, the road trip home I usually drive by myself, but today Makoto drove both ways and that was very helpful!

Roundtrip to Santa Maria was about 460 miles (about 740km) that’s quite a distance.

Candy Man

Right around this season at MOONEYES USA, at a specific time each day you will hear a RING! It’s the ringing of a bell and the sound that the Candy Man has arrived.

As the bell rings, he enters the premises and waits a few moments. If no one comes out to buy anything, he quietly leaves and moves on.

Within that time, he doesn’t say anything to announce he is here.

Like a wind chime ring he appears and the next moment he is gone, but today I purchased Ice Candy from the Candy man.

Amigo! Uno ice candy
Summer is here.
Amigo! Uno ice candy, is this one good?

It feels like I just arrived in California but 2 weeks have already passed. Time sure flies, although I’m not here on vacation. There are so many things going on that it’s hard to find the right timing to return. This weekend in Santa Maria will be the West Coast Kustoms event Cruisin Nationals and we’ll have a booth there. As we were making preparations, Mr. Junichi Shimodaira of Paradise Road in Nagoya, Japan stopped by the Shop for a visit. He came to California just for the weekend event. It’s been many years since he visited the Shop.

It’s also his birthday today. To celebrate a Happy Birthday, he took a picture sitting in the Dragster. He probably feels shy but, “That’s OK, you don’t match…”

So then let’s try another location, like the MOON sign then? “This too don’t match!”
(just kidding)

Matt & Dean from Dice Magazine showed up in this nice Chevy Van.

It has that Southern California feeling to it and looks so cool!
For several years now, the younger generation in the Chopper and Bike industry have been into 70’s style but it is different in the Hot Rod and Car industry. Do you think Surfer Vans and Choppers together is going too far?

Got a California Plate

After arriving in Long Beach, Ca. USA and at the end of a hustle, the California Plate was finally put on!

Just with the plate change, the overall look of the car has also changed. It got to spread its wings and drive the streets. The car was made in 1964 so I’m thinking about getting a Black Plate in the future. The only thing is the 3R 1900cc engine is slow. On the contrary, it’s actually dangerous.

It’s the first time I’ve driven a 3R in the USA and it’s really dangerous. I can’t keep up to speed with the cars around me. Once I’m up to speed it’s fine but getting there is dangerous. I didn’t even consider an attempt on the Freeway.
A 1965 Toyota 3R Motor has about 90 horsepower and a 1964 Ford Mustang 289 has about 200 horsepower, more than double so running side by side would be dangerous.

Back in the day when Americans purchased a Japanese car, I wonder what their expectations were or reasons why. I really want to know. This particular 1964 Toyota Masterline Pick Up was originally built in 1964 in Japan and exported to Australia. In 2005 it returned to Japan. Now, in 2009 it has been imported to USA and I believe the only one in USA!
That is its history but I don’t know about its fate!

Newport Beach, California

We had spare time so in the evening we took a ferry from Balboa Island across to the other side of Newport Beach for a cruise.

Finally got on the ferry after waiting on a narrow street for the dozens in line. Although I call it a ferry, it can only transport three cars plus people at a time. It was a 5 minute ride and cost just $4 for the car and 3 people, but the view of Newport Beach are spectacular.

On the other side where we got off the ferry

The gate was risen, you could see all the cars lined up waiting to board and go back.

It was a strange feeling to leave the ferry and come ashore. We headed to a restaurant called Crab Cooker which is located near the Newport Beach pier. Just as the name indicates, they serve Wildman’s favorite, crab, and the reason we went there.

It’s a very popular restaurant and any time you go there’s a long line. People sit and wait outside in line and while waiting the evening turned to twilight.

We waited 30 minutes and our name was called. This was the scene as we entered the restaurant. When we got to our seat, outside was already dark.

The lighting, the aroma in the air, overall the atmosphere, it would be cool to see a nice classic car in this picture.

What do we see, on the opposite side of the street was a ’56 Chevy parked making the scene look overdone. But so cool! As I was really getting into the views our dinner was brought to our table. An interesting thing about this place is they use paper plates, plastic cups and utensils. All of it is disposable.

First, Shrimp & Crab Cocktail, then the most recommended Tomato Base Clam Chowder, Manhattan Clam Chowder. This tastes great!

Clam Chowder on Fridays, but it was Sunday. In the back is soup and in front is beer.

Then the main dish, Alaska King Crab claws on one plate and legs on another.

そして僕はHalibut(オヒョウ?)
For me, I had Halibut.

Wildman
The huge order of crab that was ordered made Wildman really excited and happy.

But his face turned serious when he began to eat. Why is it when people eat crab they look so serious and don’t talk much like they are in a scuffle with the crab?

Once the inside meat starts to come out, the happy face returns.

After finishing the delicious dinner, it was pitch black outside. Although it’s May in Newport Beach, night time was rather cold.

On the 16th & 17th, at A-1 MOON Garage, there will be three domestic cars built by MOONEYES on display. The Debonair “MOON Glow”, Gloria “Glory Rod” and finally the Crown Pick Up with a Chevy V-8 will be there to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the shop opening. By all means, please be sure to stop by for a visit.

A Weekend in Long Beach, California

先週末の土曜日はLong BeachにあるQueen Mary号でToyota Festと言うトヨタ車があつまるイベントがあり、日曜日は恒例のLong Beach Swap Meet(LBSM)がLong Beach Veterans Stadiumで開催されました。
The Toyotafest, an event for all Toyota automobiles, was held on Saturday last weekend at Queen Mary Park in Long Beach followed by the Long Beach Swap Meet (LBSM) at Long Beach Veterans Stadium on Sunday.

金曜日、日本から送ってあった1964 Toyota Masterline Pick Upの車高を下げ、Ready to Go! Lic(仮ナンバー?)
On Friday, the 1964 Toyota Masterline Pick Up that was sent over from Japan was lowered (a few inches) and Ready to Go! Last check was the Engine Oil and “WATER”! What in the world! Plans had been made to drive the pickup there and even had temporary license plates and registration. But, it had to be hauled by trailer instead. There was nothing that could be done about that.

Later on at Mooneyes we pulled out the MOONEYES Dragster and lined it up in front of the Masterline as if it were a Push Car. Although the origins are from two different countries, the period is correct and didn’t look out of place, actually looked very good together. It could almost pass for a photograph taken by Dean MOON.

Anyway, the following day we were off to Toyota Day with the V-8 Toyopet (Kannon) Crown being driven and a Chevy Van hauling the trailer.

The Toyotafest gathers over 350 Toyota vehicles. The younger crowd seemed to have many variations of Scion XB (in Japan it’s a bB) styles. Examples with Trim Rings, White Ribbons, Spacer Hub Caps etc. and even a Japanese-esque XB as well. Among the cars, as always, the ones that excite me most are the Japanese Drag Race Cars.

Drag Race
A Drag Race Celica, without a doubt, looks really cool.

Something about this Corolla 2 door sedan really got my interest too.

There were customers at the MOONEYES booth all day checking out the entire product line of Kousoku Yuen items. Kousoku Yuen is such a strange word in translation that it might have been hard to understand for people in the USA. On top of that the wording used on the products like “BET-TARI” and “MAT-TARI” are difficult to explain in a simple way.

MOONEYES AwardはBest Of Showの副賞としてSupraのオーナーに送られました。
The MOONEYES Award was an extra award given out besides Best of Show, and when to this Supra owner.

:Just repaired last year but still haven’t had time? In bare metal form, this trailer was taken to Bonneville and didn’t take long to start rusting.)

When the event was over, the Masterline was loaded back on the red-rusty trailer and we headed back to MOONEYES on #710 Long Beach Freeway. However, on the way back, the throttle cable on the V-8 Kannon Crown snapped and made it immobile.

:JAF in Japan does the same kind of services.)

Luckily, Yoshi is a Premier AAA member and called for assistance. A wrecker (tow-truck) arrived on the scene in less than 20 minutes! Unfortunately, the Crown was too low and couldn’t be hitched, so along came their backup, a Flat Bed (Roll-Back). Within another 15 minutes the Flat Bed arrived.

Staff carefully help with loading the Crown. The two AAA men seemed to like the car.

From the time the cable broke to the car being loaded it took one hour and Done! Fast! I had stopped using my own AAA membership but after seeing this I have decided to renew my AAA membership again. I thanked and tipped the driver and we were off one way to the Shop.

The next day, Sunday, we were up early for the Long Beach Swap Meet (LBSM). While walking around, we ran into Mr. Erie of Shirley Mama from Kyushu.

As we walked together, we encountered Nash. The members with him like to shake hands and they lured me into shaking their hands. (I normally don’t like to shake hands when I see someone I know from Japan – usually bow)

They were here to attend an Art Show at Gasoline Gallery in El Segundo the day before (Saturday). At LBSM, this Ford Capri really got my attention. I have never seen one like this before…

MOONEYES Event

9月は13日(日)El Camino Nationals、20日(日)VW Type 2 Party、27日(日)はAll Odds Nationals。

A lol of requests have been coming in for holding the El Camino Nationals event, and we are pleased to inform everyone that we have scheduled a tentative date for Sept. 13 (Sunday) to be held in Honmoku, Yokohama.

It was Blue Panic that was really supposed to hold the event but under the various circumstances (in other words, I heard it was not having the energy to do it) the event wasn’t held last year either.

This year, Truck Masters is scheduled with a date but El Camino Nationals was not on the schedule and no date had been set yet so MOONEYES will hold the event.

We haven’t decided on entry details or anything yet but wanted to confirm and inform everyone that “It’s On!”

September 13 (Sunday) El Camino Nationals
September 20 (Sunday) VW Type 2 Party
September 27 (Sunday) All Odds nationals
November will have the 20th anniversary Crown Picnic too.

Oh! Almost forgot. On August 2 (Sunday) in Odaiba, Tokyo (same place as last year) is the Motorcycle Swap Meet event.

Then, on December 6 (Sunday) is the 18th Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show!

Drag Race at Fuji Speedway

It’s been a while since there was a Drag Race event held at Fuji Speedway so I went to watch on April 29 (Wednesday).

It was great weather and seeing Mt. Fuji on the way to the Speedway really brought back memories! Looks like Teppey even brushed his teeth.

Close by, Nishi Nishi’s Maverick was stopped and the engine was being modified.

Pit Crew was Mr. Tokita from Vannuys.

It was a good feeling to see so many USA cars in the Pit area.
There were many Top Fuel and Funny Cars in the paddock. You could freely enter the pits and see race cars in close proximity which made it really fun.
As one might think, just by holding an event at Fuji Speedway really makes it exciting!

Next event at Fuji Speedway is the Super American Festival on July 27 (Sunday).
There will be Drag Races held so I hope to repair the Camaro so it can race then.

May 6 (Wednesday) is a Japanese holiday, Children’s Day, so the blog will not be updated as I will take the day off! I hope everyone enjoys the Golden Week holiday as well!!
