Chopper,
Two weekends ago was the “Hippy Killer Hoedown” bike event in Southern California in Winchester at The Wild West Arena. Hippy Killer Garage, Kutty, whom also comes to HCS is the promoter/organizer of the event and this was their 3rd year already.
Of course, the main attraction of bikes are Harley based but there are quite a few Japanese based choppers and many are well done. Before it seemed there were just a hand full but this year there were at least 30.
There were all kinds of So Cal chopper styles spread out all over the place, a lot of younger riders too this time.
With Harleys being so expensive, it’s not easy for everyone to get their hands on one so that is one reason why I think other bikes are getting popular which I think this is a good thing.
There’s always something creative and fresh coming out of So Cal.
VANNUYS BLOG
The 25th Annual Street Car Nationals finished without any major situations. Thank you very much.
The weather forecast was calling for sunny skies, however the night before was raining very hard I started to ask myself, “Is it really going to be sunny on Sunday?!” but after that, the next morning was nice and clear with occasional strong winds. By the time we started the event, the weather was perfect.
With this being the 25th time holding the event, there was a need to have “something special” for the occasion. However, with the disaster of March 11 and being not too long after, it wasn’t the right mood for something to celebrate. After much consideration, it was decided that instead, we would do something special for the victims of the tragic events from 3/11. So, it was a matter of, what could SCN do?
After much consideration, we felt that each individual person coming to the event could contribute. Not only that, in all aspects of the event and at the 25th SCN we would hold a charity auction as well.
In all aspects of SCN, everyone contributed, even without knowing at first. First off, 25% of all Car Show & Swap Meet registrations were going to charity. So many MOONEYES Friends from USA contributed gifts to be auctioned, we were set for a complete day of auctioning and raising money for the charity as well. That’s what became “MOONEYES & Friends Charity Auction”. Considering how we all started to realize the value of electricity (from the power plant failure), we made a limited edition sticker MOTTAINAI which sold out 2,000 stickers before the end of the day. All proceeds went to charity. Treasure hunters were digging for old MOONEYES Event-Only T-shirts in a huge pile. These also sold out and sale went to charity. We also collected MOON Tank one-coins at the event and at MOONEYES Area-1 and MOON Cafe in Honmoku for charity. The catering services at the event also contributed by 5% of their registration fee going to charity. Overall, the grand total was just shy of 5.5 million yen, about $65,000 USD. This amount was donated to the Japanese Red Cross.
With everyone contributing a little and a few others contributing a lot, it’s amazing how fast it adds up. We are grateful for everyone that came to the event and for contributing support. Thank you very much. This is surely making a big difference to the people affected by the disaster of 3/11. We hope the recovery is as fast as possible and everything gets back to normal real soon.
There’s one important thing I would like to note. If a situation occurs where there’s a need of an emergency evacuation, according to the city of Tokyo, 1. In case of an earthquake, the evacuation location is the area of where SCN is taking place. In a large scale earthquake, parked vehicles will jump and sway so it’s best to keep clear of any vehicles. 2. In a situation of tsunami. the evacuation location is Fuji Television or similar tall buildings are the place to head. It’s a good idea to state it up front with all the activity lately. Be prepared for safety, please.
It may cause greater chaos if you take refuge in a vehicle so please refrain from that.
Also, it is a good idea to leave your key in the car when evacuating the area. (I always hear that in these situations, it’s best to leave the key with the car)
Of course, make sure you don’t leave any valuables behind in the vehicle.
Also, sorry to have to state it as this but in an emergency situation where evacuation is necessary, theft, damage, or worse may occur and some not preventable but all of it will be out of our hands.
It is something that we don’t want to talk about but I felt it should be posted for the record to everyone.
That said, most important is to be able to see and meet everyone at the event and have a good time. Please be careful and see you there.
Lately on MOONTERNET (web) and 3M (MOONEYES Mail Magazine) we’ve been plugging away at the upcoming Street Car Nationals event on Sunday April 24th in Odaiba Tokyo and the Rescue Japan “MOONEYES & Friends Charity Auction” that will be held during the event.
The contributors of items have been very generous we might not have enough time to showcase them all. All of the contributors have been so concerned about Japan their hearts opened up with donations to the auction. From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much for your donations.
For example, already confirmed guests to HCS this year, Bean Bandit memebers put together an assortment of items like this.
The Bonneville Speedway metal sign is very cool.

Last month I posted about the MOONEYES USA Palm Trees being cut down.
The people came to cut the two palms down and were supposed to plant two new trees as well. However, after cutting the two trees they left and never came back to finish the job. Also, the trees they cut down were left behind as well.
On the bright side it was $200 and could have been much worse. In any case, we had to find a way to get rid of the cut down trees and figure out what to do next. Maybe it was lost in translation but the tree cutters left and never returned.
After everything was said and done, we were unable to or locate a place to take the trees for replanting (I wonder about this) and ended up disposing the old trees.
Now a month or so later, April 14, I arrive at MOONEYES USA in the morning and see Chico, Darren, Leonard and GO-kun out front with palm trees getting ready to plant. I wonder if they planned on doing this on the day I came on purpose, but the tree were a nice height, just right.
Palm Tree
These palm trees have a lot of small thin roots and makes it hard to deal with initially.
To help with the handling of the roots, a bag is covered over it.
Chico も Leonard も
Chico & Leonard working
Go-kun helped out as well.
You could notice Chico was getting tired.
Go kun
GO-Kun was tired as well
Darren was fine though.
First one going in.
Getting it in place.
Finally, one plam tree in place.
Bob finally came outside and was laughing lie, “You all are doing it yourself?”
Second one coming up and in place.
Now I wonder if these two will last 20 years like the first ones. They’ll probably get really tall too. But for a while, they will be perfect size for souvenir photos in front of MOONEYES.
Beginning in April, the parking lot behind Area-1 has become available on Sundays and Holidays.
The photo is from last week Sunday. Interestingly enough, all of the cars are parked front in first.
In Japan, a long time ago, I used to think it was “American-style!” to park this way but parking this way in Japan makes it extremely difficult to get out. It isn’t like the wide USA spaces where you can easily pull in and out, it’s actually almost never that easy. I dislike the inconvenience so I always parking with the back in first.
Lately in California, maybe because there are an increasing number of compact cars but it seems to be getting the same way as Japan where it’s hard to park front in first because more and more of the parking spaces are getting tighter. So now, even when I’m in California, I always parking with the back in first.
Cherry blossoms are full bloom in Honmoku.
The area has also been very actively shaking too.

BMW 7 Series,
Blackout.
MOONEYES in German is translated to “Mond Augen”
Besides VW, this is the first German make for MOONEYES. On top of that is a high-end luxury BMW 7 Series, although it is a 13 year old used car which has an affordable market value now.
This particular model 7 series appears to have a big front fascia and small headlights. The full size body is painted yellow & black with all the chrome replaced with semi-gloss black for a blackout look.
Dzus Fastener
The MOON Disc Saturn 20″ are made to look like they are wrapping the entire wheel. The discs are mounted on aluminum wheels so Dzus Fasterners are used which is the same method used on Bonneville Race Cars to mount securely. In order to use Dzus Fasterners, mounting tabs must be welded to the aluminum wheels and this was done at MOONEYES USA Machine Shop.
MOON Disc Saturn 20″, Dzus Fastener
MOON Disc
This will be available as a complete set, including wheel and disc. This car for example, 20″ aluminum wheel, MOON Disc Saturn 20″, Dzus Fastener mounts would be about 65,000 yen per 1 wheel. The MOON Disc covers the entire wheel so it doesn’t matter what the design is and if you get your own, of course, the price will be different. In Japan, late model Japanese and American cars are not providing very good custom base designs. However, you can look towards obtaining European models at reasonable prices these days that have nice features.
Just thought I’d throw that out there.
