MOONEYES 18th Annual YOKOHAMA HOT ROD Custom Show in PACIFICO YOKOHAMA, JAPAN
REPORT & GALLERY
It hasn't been the best of economic times recently, in Japan, USA, as well as many places around the globe. So leading up the show, there was a bit of skepticism, a small dash of worry, a dose of anxiety and a few other feelings too. However, the show must go on, and it did.
Looking back now, and now that the numbers are in, we can see there were 250 Show Cars, 650 Motorcycles, 220 Vendor Booths, 35 Pinstripers, 15 Scale Model Spaces and finally in our new category Collectivities Alley, there were 20 spaces.
The crowd was absolutely amazing this year! Who would have though, one of the most important cars in hot rod history would be here in Yokohama this year? That's right, for the first time, the original car featured in the movie American Graffiti revitalized an almost forgotton love of hot rods. It was made in the 70s when the US was going through many changes. Almost lost in just 10 years, it sparked the fire of the 60s era hot rods and custom cars and has kept the fire going ever since.
What happens when you bring the Milner Deuce Coupe and its rival, the Falfa Street Machine to HCS? It transform into Paradise Road!
0930 - Annual tradition at HCS, the RIDE IN.
During the show, Candy Clark (original cast "Debbie" from the American Graffiti movie) was kept busy all day with fans lined up for hours!
The second car to make the RIDE IN was rock-n-roll hall of famer band leader of ZZ TOP, Billy F Gibbons and a freshly completed, 1958 Ford Thunderbird, the "MEXICAN BLACKBIRD". A stunning 60s period custom handled by SO-CAL Speed Shop. Accompanying BFG to Japan was the owner of SO-CAL himself, Pete Chapouris.
When two great entities come together, there's a tremendous uproar. In this case, it was the mass of people that came in like magnets. The presense alone of BFG gets everyone into an exciting rock-n-roll mood.
When we planned the show, we wanted to be sure there also a real-deal hot rod that can still be looked at with awe and admired in it's heavily vintage state. That's where Willie Dorsey's 1955 Chevy Bel Air Hardtop GASSER fit like a glove!
Not only was this car locally built raced and forgotten in Sand Diego, California back in the 60s, when Willie acquired it, he left it that way. Brilliant! Of, that is what Willie does. All he did was get it running again, and there it was, you didn't have to look because it shook the ground as it growled it way down the RIDE IN lane.
Custom shop, Paradise Road's "GALAXIAN" HCS best of show 2008 was on display and took part in the RIDE IN.
HCS best of show 2008 Motorcycle was on display as well.
Roland Sands (RSD) warmed things up with a huge burnout just before the RIDE IN! Amazing. He made sure to keep the smoke outside!
Crazy Fast Cracker, Tom Foster built "BUSHIDO" a high power chopper machine as a tribute to his visit last year. AWESOME!
Hippy Killer Garage, Kutty Noteboom brought a newly completed 70s dragster Shovelheld, "Plum Smuggler" that had everyone trippin!
All the way from Switzerland, Hard Nine Choppers, Danny, brought his BMX tribute flathead, "D'MX"
Skyway looking wheels, dirt tires and all. That's Rad!
Cole Foster's conception of the YAMAHA SR. This was his first time customizing one as they are not on the market in the USA.
MOONEYES Staff, Goshu brought the bike to Cole and then let him work his magic. Definitely has that Cole Foster touch.
Gabe Griffin's tribute Panhead featured a glass art tank, custom paint and engravings on the engine parts.
Mark Drews returned to Japan this year with his Panhead chopper featuring vintage custom metal worked tank and matching fender.
The paint job is vintage as well as the tall exhaust stacks. A very cool ride indeed.
The HARPOON as the SUBTERRANEAN Panhead chopper. The more you look at it, the more you appreciate 50s and 60s customs.
This tank had metal work flames that were just amazing. Newly added iron cross sissy bar was like it was supposed to be there.
DicE Magazine's Matt brought over his Shovelhead. Very groovy style.
