Regular Maintenance! at Moon Garage

-Oil Change, New Filter-

So your driving the ride of your dreams!!  Congratulations, but no matter how old or new,  you must realize the importance of Regular Maintenance.

Not only will your Car, Truck or Bike run and feel heaps better, but real car enthusiasts will take notice and your love and appreciation for your new machine will speak volumes.  There is nothing more annoying than a guy who dresses the part, but knows little to nothing about how to take care of their vehicle.  Moon is here to help.  Come by the Garage and ask our knowledgable staff any car questions you may have, we don’t know everything, but we can almost certainly figure it out.

You can get all you typical maintenance required parts and fluids at Mooneyes Area-1.

Today I am changing the oil on a 1956 Chevy 265ci Small Block.  This poor little guy was neglected for far to long.

Lucas Oil Stabilizer- helps your engine in several ways, it is one of the best additives out there in my opinion.  You will notice improved performance from the very first change.

Valvoline Max Life- For engines with over 120,000 kilometers.

Fram Extra Guard Filter- The engine was equipped with a PH13 filter, but we will replace with a PH5 since the specs are very similar.  Filtering qualities are identical.

Vehicles may not have a voice, but they communicate in other ways.  The oil and sludge tells me that maintenance was not a priority to the previous owner.  The color and texture of the oil paints the picture.

2000 Chevy Astro/GMC Safari – Radiator Swap

2000 Chevy Astro shares all the same mechanical components as its GMC counterpart the Safari.

On this occasion, I swapped out a leaking radiator with a new one.

Removal can get messy, make sure the radiator is drained and hoses are out of the way.

The transmission fluid lines have small clips that can be difficult to remove without the right tool.

The old radiator, time for retirement.  Lived a long life, but the stress of Japanese seasons was just to much for this little guy.

Poor maintenance may have also promoted to it’s demise.

The old radiator had a big crack.  was getting worse due to the heat and pressure changes that happen within the radiator.

New Radiator, waiting for a new home.

Finished and ready for many more years of keeping your engine cool.  Just in time for summer.

M20 Muncie 4 speed – Complete Overhaul

We recently took on the task of rebuilding a 1967 Muncie 4 speed transmission.

Every part was removed and carefully inspected.  Bad parts were tossed out and replaced with new parts.

Photo May 08, 4 19 11 PM

The rebuild went rather smoothly, expect to see more details regarding the M20 Muncie rebuild soon in

one of Japans best car magazines.  I will be sure to let you know when it is available.

If you need a transmission rebuild or information regarding parts to rebuild your own tranny,

don’t hesitate to stop by the Moon Garage and our knowledgeable Moon staff

will be more than happy to help you figure it out.

Edelbrock Carburetor Rebuild -1960 Thunderbird

1960 T-Bird Carburetor Rebuild.

Black smoke from the exhaust, difficult to fire up in the morning and fuel air mixture screws were not reacting to adjustments.  These were all the sure fire signs that the T-Bird needed a carburetor rebuild.

4BBL Edelbrock Thunder Series Carburetor.  Not to difficult.  The hard part was cleaning it up.

The garbage sitting at the bottom of the float bowl is not doing the engine any good.

There was even a little water up in there.

A piece of cardboard to hold the screws and hardware is a must when rebuilding any carb.

IMG_5062 IMG_5086

The gasket was not coming off without a fight.  I left it soaking in some Kerosene for a couple house and it really helped loosen the gunk and old gasket material.

After everything is cleaned up and your work area is prepped, its time to begin re-assembly.

Take time to make sure all rods and springs are positioned and adjusted to specs.

Check to be sure you are getting current at the choke connector.  Use a test-light or DMM.

I highly recommend changing the fuel filter and air filter along with doing the rebuild.

Fire it up!!  Purrs like a kitten when idle and roars like a tiger when you step on her tail.

1959 Cadillac with 454ci – ECU Swap and Tuning

1959 Cadillac with a Megasquirt 2 ECU

Unfortunately, the Cadillac was not in the best condition.  I highly recommend not installing a major component like an Engine Computer if your engine has not been taken care of correctly.  It makes the entire process a real NIGHTMARE!

Photo Apr 01, 5 41 46 PM

The Engine computer has to be prepped.  Every engine requires Hardware and Software modifications.

Photo Mar 29, 3 13 04 PM

Custom wire  harness had to be made to insure all the wiring was correct.

Photo Mar 29, 3 15 00 PM

Among many other parts, the throttle body had to be rebuilt.  The pressure regulator is built into the assembly on this particular model.

Required quite a bit of tuning, but got it where it had to be!

Tuning the maps requires attention and some know how.  Wideband sensors really make this loads of easier.

Crown with 1JZ Engine – Oil Change

I recently performed an oil change on the 1970 Toyoya Crown with the 1JZ Engine.

And I must say, it was not as easy as I expected.

2015-02-17 20.00.31

Prepped some kitty litter for the old oil.

2015-02-24 16.34.09

The filter was not easy to access from the top or bottom.

2015-02-24 16.36.20 2015-02-24 16.36.24

And worst, there was only about 1/8 of an inch clearance between the cross member and oil filter.

I was forced to modify my oil filter removal wrench.

Don’t let this gunk stay in your engine.

Be sure to change your oil frequently or come by the Moon Garage for you next oil change.

Noise coming from rear wheel – 1954 Plymouth

The `54 Plymouth was back in the Garage, but this time for a screeching noise coming from the Rear Right wheel.

2015-02-19 13.09.09

2015-02-19 13.17.53

Special tools were required in order to remove the drum and hub assembly.

A custom puller made by Endo-sans Father.

2015-02-19 13.24.09 2015-02-19 13.43.27

The hub was extremely difficult to remove.  Be sure to use Safety equipment if you do this type of work.  The amount of pressure pulling the hub could really cause some damage.  BE CAREFUL!!

The old drum is a two piece type and one of the rivets that was used to hold the pieces together had come loose and was causing all kinds of noise and damage.  Luckily, the problem was fixed before anything major occurred.

2015-02-19 13.43.31 2015-02-19 13.44.46

The rivet was beginning to dig into the drum.

The drum was cracked anyhow,so it was a better time than ever to replace it.

New- wheel cylinder rebuild kit, brake drum, brake shoes, retainer clips and spring.  Nice and simple.

2015-02-19 14.21.08 2015-02-19 14.46.39

The final assembly went rather smoothly.

Fortunately, it wasn’t anything to major.

The Plymouth was back on the road in a matter of hours, and braking safety was restored!!

1960 Chevy Impala Exhaust Manifold Swap (Original)

A common problem with straight engines is the tendency for the exhaust manifolds to crack due to frequent heat differences along the manifold casting.  Although welding the crack is a quick fix, there is no doubt that the best fix is replacing the assembly.  A bit of work is involved, but nothing we can’t handle here at the Moon Garage.

Toyota – Tachometer Repair

The tachometer in the SR5 stopped working awhile back.  So of course, I decided to pull out the meter assembly and have a look.
