MOON Space Agency Steve’s Malaysia Trip Report (日本語版はこちらです) Art of Speed Asia 2014 in Kuala, Lumpur (June 7-8, 2014) at Citta Mall Greetings! This is Steve from MOONEYES. I've been lucky enough to be a part of the growing custom culture event in Malaysia each year (AOS2013, AOS2012). This year it was the third year in a row that Art of Speed has been held and it was easy to see that it's growing steadily. This year, it was held in Citta Mall again; the same location as last year. Thousands of people flocked here over the two day event from all over. The weather was amazing all weekend with sunny skies and fluffy clouds.
This year, Shige-san, Wildman and myself traveled from MOONEYES. Wildman was an invited guest to do his pinstriping and we were there for support. Additional guests this year from Japan included pinstripers Makoto, Mr. G, Boo and JetWrench escorted by The Nash. Nao from Flat 4 was a guest as their Type-1 "The Inch Pincher" was sent over. Rocky Auto was also a guest this year traveling from Nagoya. Originally they planned on bringing one of his creations but in the end it didn't happen. Fans in Malaysia were excited just to see Mr. Watanabe in person. And finally, Dino from Speedhunters.com flew out from Japan too. He not only covered the event but was a guest as well.
We arrived in KL early, as AirAsiaX does. By 6:00AM we were already outside. The new airport was a huge improvement from LCCT. We jumped in our mini bus and headed for our hotel arriving in KL for early check-in, dropped off our baggage and met in the lobby to have breakfast.
We had a traditional KL breakfast from a popular street vendor area.
After that, we had a free day and decided to head for Petronas Twin Towers. On the way we were blown away by the vintage dump trucks still putting in work. We walked to KLCC, a luxury shopping mall at the base of the towers. By the time we made it to the tower entrance, they were closed for lunch! We decided to come back later... when we did, they were booked until that night. As it turns out, you need to make reservations to go up to the walkway. It's not first-come-first-serve... oh well, maybe next time.
In the evening, we headed to Citta Mall. It was the pre party. People were still setting up. We checked out our location for the weekend. It was in the art gallery area. The party included introductions, live music and Wildman doing some pinstriping. "Jason" the DJ was bumping sounds all night. We made it back to the hotel, then it was time for more partying at Hard Rock Cafe. Hard Rock Cafe is located in the lobby of our hotel. This made it easy to get back to our room. Long night...
In the morning (Saturday), we drove to Citta Mall again. The second image above is a border crossing signifying you now have left the state of Kuala Lumpur (KL) and entered Petaling Jaya (PJ).
In the morning we set up our table. Shige-san was already busy signing.
Fresh fruits and cool cars. Flat-4 "Inch Pincher III" & RWB Malaysia.
I immediately headed out to get some photos of the cars this year.
CARS ON DISPLAY
Dickies has a booth with a few motorcycles on display.
This it was back to viewing even more cars.
On Sunday they had a soapbox run but as it turned out, there was more interest in using the huge ramp. Only a few brave drivers tried. One didn't make it...
Non stop all day, the art gallery was busy with artists, guests and pinstripe action!
At the end of the first day (Saturday) we managed to have enough energy for one last group photo.
The next day (Sunday) we started out fresh in the morning from our hotel again. Our driver was from GRABCAR/MYTEKSI and was super cool he posed for our #SHIZUKANI #HCS2014 photo campaign. We arrived at Citta Mall early and decided to get breakfast at McDonald's! We tried the BREKKIE WRAP combo, grilled chicken sausage and smoked chicken wraps. Excellent!
Featured artists were on display inside the art gallery.
Immediately, pinstripers were busy. Wildman, Mr. G, Makoto and everyone.
Just before lunch, we headed out to the main stage. Asep introduced the guests and announced the awards that were going to be selected later in the afternoon.
Then it was right back to the art gallery.
I headed back out to check out the Volkswagen selection.
More Cars on Display
Then it was over the the main tent which featured the custom bikes.
There were a lot of custom street Honda Cubs and modified bikes to see!
When I returned to the art gallery, Wildman was busy pinstriping the RWB Malaysia Porsche that was on display.
Owner Christian watched in awe.
The day was packed with people and the art gallery was non stop. It was great to see familiar faces, friends and make new ones too.
The awards were announced on stage in the afternoon. The best in show car and bike both received a free ticket to HCS2014 which Art of Speed did last year. We'll see you in Yokohama this December! Each guest also presented an award including the MOONEYES PICK!
MOONEYES PICK AWARD went to Lawson Lee. Congratulations!
Various photos from the day...
At the end of the event, we had a fantastic dinner with everyone and headed back to the hotel. Although we had planned to end it all at Hard Rock Cafe again, we just didn't have enough gas. We were all exhausted. It was an incredible event once again and we're already planning for next year!
The next day we had breakfast as the hotel and headed for the airport in our black MB mini bus. The new airport is huge! It's like a shopping mall. Thank you to Art of Speed for having us again this year and we can't wait until next year! Hope you enjoyed my photos from AOS2014 and see you at the next event!
