"4 Way Stop"
Last weekend I was in Hawaii to attend some work.

I left Hawaii Island (Big Island) on Saturday to Oahu Island and following 7am on next morning, Sunday 15th of October. I woke up with small shake, next there was a big earthquake with strong sway and I was jumping out of bed but as I was on 9th floor of a Hotel, even with small shake that I am used to in Japan I was worried if this building here is OK and so on. After all the earthquake was just that once, but right after that entire Oahu Island had power down. It was the Hawaii Island Earthquake.

I couldn't tell what was going on with no TV and no radio with power down. Everything was not functioning, the elevator at hotel was stopped, corridor had no light, and restaurant was closed. Even airport too.

The only source of information was radio on car, so I took my rent a car out on street, but all signal lights were down (of course) and police was taking control at big intersection.

"Four Way Stop" was followed at crossing with no police. Four Way Stop is not familiar rule in Japan but usually taken at small crossing and in residential area and I always thought it was good rule for safety. If this Four Way Stop was introduced to Japan, I would think that crash on crossing will decrease, But may be too much stop sign in Japan as too many crossings are here.

This time with signal lights down by power down every cars were taking Four Way Stop. The rule of Four Way Stop is the first car came to the crossing will cross the crossing first. which means that driver has to know the order of entry to the crossing. It gets complicated with 2,3 and 4 lanes, left turn or right turn but its simply making a way to each other.

Everyone was following that rule but car which ignored the rules were rent a car driven by Tourist. USA has driving rule as "Four Way Stop" to work out in some natural disaster like this time
and good as it can avoid confusion, crash on street. What if all signal lights had power down in Cities in Japan, Most likely a big confusion.

In this power down, everything got back in 10pm for about 15 hours. Famous ABC store was packed with people buying foods, line was tow hours long. Restaurant were not able to open and difficult to get something to eat. The cell phone battery was running low, TV and Radio is no good. Our life can not function without electricity.

There is no way of getting information in natural disaster, I really had good experience to feel the need of getting ready with things like radio work with battery, flash light and cell phone battery charger (with handy generator), drinking water. Candles are even better to carry. This earthquake was remind me how importance of electricity.

先週末、ちょっと用事があり、ハワイ島に行ってました。 "4 Way Stop"Last weekend I was in Hawaii to attend some work. The rule of Four Way Stop is the first car came to the crossing will cross the crossing…
[1
