Main Day Start
May 26 (Saturday)
Today is the main day at Santa Maria Fairpark. MOONEYES had a booth right when you enter the event area.
In the morning it was actually really cold. I didn't plan for this and didn't bring anything to keep me warm. Initially I tried to play if off but soon enough I just couldn't take it. It was cold! If it wasn't for the event hooded pullover I don't know what I would have done. So please, anyone interested in coming to this event, be sure to check the weather forecast to get an idea of what it will be like.
Back to the topic on hand. The event area. I had no idea how big the Fairpark was so I started walking around and checking things out. Then I started to recognize many of the cars on display from the articles I've read in magazines from past events. "Woh! I've seen this one before..." I would stop in my tracks. Then walk again and see a car I've never seen before, approach closer and have to stop again. What I thought would be a quick lap around the event area had me stopping at just about every car displayed.
People, people and more people. Famous builders, popular car clubs and members, veterans of the industry and just the overall mood was at a grand scale. I realized this event is very crowded with people, all interested or connected to the industry. Possibly more so than any USA event I've been to. Inside the event hall were tons of things to see. Vendor booths, Kustom Kulture related demos, bicycle competition, model car competition and food. So much to see.
Inside the event area focuses strictly on pre 1961 Customs, Kustoms, Hot Rods, Bombs, Custom Low Riders, early '60s Customs and more as long as it's an American car from 1961 or earlier. It's not sectioned off by an categories and allows the group or owners to display the cars how they want which gives it a natural mix and blend, keeping it interesting no matter where you are in the event hall. You can see fabulous show cars lined up next to a bare metal work in progress or daily driven faded out custom. Personally, I like them all.
After viewing everything I possibly could I felt, possibly for the first time, inspired or motivated. Seeing all these awesome cars was incredible. I don't know how to put it into words. I bet if Wildman was here, he'd have tons of things to say.
