MOON SPACE AGENCY Steve's USA Trip Report (English)

Greetings from MOONEYES! This is Steve from MOON SPACE AGENCY. My first trip abroad this year was to cover the 64th Annual Grand National Roadster Show at the Fairplex in Pomona, California from January 25-27, 2013. So exciting! Last year was my first time going to this event and I traveled with Goshu and Sumi. The report is here (https://www.mooneyes.co.jp/2012-0126-usa-trip-en). This year I had to cover the event alone, all three days. I am pleased to say that I survived all three days and managed to take a few photos as well. Here are a selection of images from my trip. Enjoy!
My trip started on Wednesday, arriving in Los Angeles (LAX) then picking up a car rental and heading to MOONEYES in Santa Fe Springs (SFS)... without NAVI... luckily I printed out a map before I left Japan so I knew the basic route. No problem. From the moment I got off the plane, it was cloudy and overcast. Rain was expected. After I arrived safely in SFS we heading to Pomona to unload and setup the main items for the MOONEYES Booth. By the time we got back to the shop, it was late and starting to rain. The map above-right shows the layout of the event area and the location of where the MOONEYES booth was inside the main building (#4).
The next morning it was still raining but stopped before lunch. No sunshine though. We spent the entire day setting up the booth. We returned to the shop late that night too. It wasn't raining but the forecast was expecting scattered showers the entire weekend. It was now Thursday night. The next three days would be nothing but car show fever! I spent each day going through building after building. The following photos are separated by building number to keep things in groups. There are nine buildings to see if you include the NHRA Museum plus all the cars outside in between the buildings.
Building 3. A Day At The Drags "GASSERS" This building features vintage drag race cars and gassers. It's a smaller building compared to the others in the event but the selection of authentic and vintage race cars are amazing to see.
Building 4, AMBR Cars. This year there were a dozen finely detailed ROADSTERS competing for the AMBR Award. AMBR stands for America’s Most Beautiful Roadster. Last year’s winner was there on display too. Inside the main hall there are vendor booths, pinstripers and all kinds of show cars on display. This is the largest building, twice the size of the other buildings. It is also where the awards ceremony is held on Sunday.
Building 5 featured different types of styles but I think the main theme was lowriders. There were a few hot rods and customs as well.
Building 6 is where the show motorcycles are on display. HCS2012 guests Mike Davis had his Triumph at the show and Todd Asin with his Triumph too. The Factory Metal Works built Moon Machine Triumph was also part of the motorcycle show. John Edwards, previously a guest at HCS, was there with his fresh looking Panhead. There were cars and bicycles on display in the other half of this building including a few more lowriders.
Building 7 was full of customs and kustoms. From bare metal restoration projects to fully modified custom creations, this building was amazing.
Building 8 is where the street rods (mainly) were. There were, of course, customs and hot rods as well in this building.
Building 9 is similar to the HCS Spotlight where they focus on a theme or category type. Last year it was the 80th Anniversary of the 1932 Ford. This year, the theme was Woodies and Wagons and with that theme comes Aloha and Surf.
Building 10 is better known as Suede Palace. It's where a variety of customs and vintage hot rods are showcased.
Outside of Suede Palace also featured more cars and a lot of car clubs. HCS2012 guest Rez Rivera's Ford Roadster was parked outside looking great with that stance.
Friday night I stopped by Fabian Valdez, of Bean Bandits, Vintage Hammer Garage in Riverside. He had an open house for his new relocated shop.
Saturday night we stopped by Dice Magazine's new issue release party. It was held in Culver City.
Sunday morning before I headed to Pomona, I got up extra early and headed to the Long Beach Swap Meet. It was cold and wet! As I was leaving, the rain stopped!
Lastly, on Sunday I visited the NHRA Museum. The MOON Exhibit is still on display. It will end after the Winternationals which is in three weeks. If you are heading to California before then, I recommend stopping by for a visit as the original MOON Dragster and Devin bodied MOONBEAM will most likely be heading back to Florida. Thank you for viewing my trip report and gallery. Hope you enjoyed the photos.
