昨年の20回記念 ストリート カー ナショナルズに来られた方は覚えていられると思いますが、表彰式の時にBoss自らその歴史を説明をした、少々くたびれた1974年式、イエローのVW タイプII デリバリーバンは1986年にムーンアイズが元町にオープンしてからずっと使っている、唯一の社用車です。いつの時代のイベントの写真にも必ず写っていて、20年以上に渡りムーンの商品を運び続けている、飾りではない正真正銘の働くクルマなのです。
2007年現在も毎日1回、Pier-1倉庫とエリア-1を荷物満載で往復しています。少し前にも富士のVannuysさんにこのクルマで出張Paintに行きましたが「まだ本当に走っているんですね」と驚かれていました。Wildmanもこのクルマには思い出がたくさんあり、Pinstriperになる前からの付き合いになります。という事でまた昔話にシフトします。
1986年にオープンした元町ムーンアイズにせっせと通うようになり、常連さん？ぶっていた頃、すでに自分が看板屋である事をBossには話していましたが、ある日「今度アルバイトやらない？」と話をもちかけられました。何のバイトかと思うと、「社用車のタイプIIをオールペンしたから看板文字を書いて欲しいんだ」とのこと。「これは楽しそうだ、ぜひぜひやらせて下さい」と即答でした。看板屋の仕事では新車のハイエースやカローラバン等、普通の？クルマの仕事ばかりでしたが（当たり前ですけど）、「タイプIIなんてそのままミニカーを大きくしたようなクルマに描けるなんてとても面白い仕事（バイト）が頂けて嬉しいな！」と作業する日を心待ちにしていました。
約束の日曜日の朝、元町ショップまでクルマを取りに行き、そこから自宅前の道路まで持って行き、道端で？仕上げてその日のうちに返却という予定でした。「じゃあ、これが鍵ね、動かし方分るよね？」とBossに言われ、「こんなクルマぜんぜん平気ですよ、それでは夕方までに仕上げて来ます」と言って元気に乗り込みました。ブルンとエンジンが掛かり、クラッチを踏んで1速にシフト！のつもりでしたがグニャリとしたへんてこフィーリングはこれまでに味わった事のない感覚でした。「何、このクルマ！何か変！」走り出しても一体何速に入っているのかさっぱり分らず、たよりないステアリングの応答と共に、自宅までの15分のドライブはいつもより長く感じられました。もちろん自宅前でバックギアに入らなかったのは言うまでも有りません。そう、この日がWildmanのVW初体験だったのです。これ以来どうもVWとは相性が悪く？何かしらトラブルに遭う事が多かったのです。この日は看板文字を仕上げて、何とか元町まで走って行きましたが、看板の作業よりも運転に疲れた感じで、もうしばらくVWには乗りたくないというのが本音でした。
ムーンに入社してからもこのクルマに乗る機会は結構多かったのですが、その中でも一番の最悪の？思い出は1992年のBug Sundayに向かう時の事でした。当時神戸で行われていたこのイベントには毎年参加していましたが、この年はWildmanがこの'74デリバンの担当で、御所山Studioより乗り込み、神戸に出発しました。いっしょに行ったのは現在アメリカのムーンにあるChevyトランスポーターで、出来上がったばかりのVW タイプIII "Surf Square"（懐かしい！！）を積んで片道600km以上の神戸までの激走？が始まりました。
東名高速に乗ってしばらく走った頃、「ピシッ！」と何か変な音がしました。その直後フロントガラスの真ん中に真っ直ぐに亀裂が走ったと思うと次の瞬間「バッシャーン！！」と音を立ててガラスが全部砕け散り室内に（足元に）落ちて来ました。「一体、何、何、何が起こったの？？」と思いましたが、気が付けばノーヘルのオートバイのような感覚で物凄い風が吹き込み、目が開いていられない状況でした。仕方なく路肩にクルマを停めて状況判断となりましたが、トランスポーターの後ろを走っていたので、もちろん気付いてくれずに一人ぽっちになってしまいました（携帯電話も無い時代です）。「まいったなこりゃ、とりあえず危ないから室内のガラスを全部掃除しよう」と思い路肩で清掃作業が始まりました。清掃終了後、さてどうしようと思っても誰も助けに来てくれないので、とりあえず走るしかないなと判断し、ハザードランプを点けながらソロソロと路肩を走り始めました。最初は猛烈な風の吹き込みに耐えられず、50kmくらいで徐行？していましたが高速道路ではあまりにも遅すぎて逆に危ないと感じ、体も慣れて来たので走行車線に戻り80km以上での爆走となりました。もうどうでもよくなってくると人間強い物で「きっと'デュースのロードスターを運転するとこんな感じかな！」と思えてWildなドライブになってきました。事故現場より30kmくらい走った最初のサービスエリアまで走って行くとそこにトランスポーターの姿があり、皆待ってくれていましたがガラスの無いタイプIIを見て驚いた後、皆爆笑となっていました・・・。いくら何でもこの姿では神戸には行けないとなったので、ショウカーのタイプIIIをトランスポーターから下ろして自走となり、タイプIIデリバンをトランスポーターに載せてショウに向かうといったヘンテコなスタイルでの神戸行きとなった、悲しい思い出のタイプIIガラス粉砕ロードスター事件でした。
この後も社用車のVWではことごとくトラブルに遭遇し、それだけで長い長いブログとなってしまうので又のお楽しみとさせて下さい。（VWが嫌いなわけではなく、相性が悪いだけです、念の為・・・）
何はともあれ現在でもこの黄色い'74タイプIIは会社の看板を背負った生き証人として、車齢33年の老体に鞭打って横浜の町を疾走しているので、皆さんも見掛けましたら暖かく見守ってやって下さい。（幼稚園の園児たちにはいつも手を振られる人気物です）

People who came to last years 20th Annual Street Car Nationals may remember well but while presenting award Boss himself introduced little about the old 1974 Yellow VW Type II delivery VAN which is the oldest company car since 1986 when MOONEYES opened at MOTOMACHI YOKOHAMA JAPAN. It's on every event picture and in every years, moving MOON Items for 20 years and real working delivery Van.
In 2007 it is still running every day between the Pier-1 warehouse and Area-1 store with full of items. A little ago Wildman went to the Fuji Vannuys for Pinstriping business trip and was surprised by staff that it was still really running. Wildman has many memories to this car and the relation goes back to the time before becoming a pinstriper. So now Wildman's another old story to tell.
In 1986 when Wildman thought he was a good customer to MOONEYES opened in MOTOMACHI and shopping almost every day. Wildman had told Boss that he was a painter and one day he asked "Do you want to do a part time Job?". What job? It was "we got company car Type II painted so want to put our logos". "That sounds fun, please let me do it!" and Wildman had answered on spot. In sign board paint job, brand New Toyota Hiace and Carolla Van and average car was main job so Wildman was very excited until the day to work on Type II. "So glad to get job to work on car which look like a toy car".
On the Sunday Morning, Wildman went to MOONEYES shop at MOTOMACHI and drive back home and paint at road in front of house and take it back on same day. "So, This is the key, You can drive right?" said Boss. "I can drive fine, I will be back by late afternoon" said Wildman with confidence and got on the car. The engine started, step on clutch and in first gear but not so as imagined. The strange feel of clutch and gear which was never experienced before. "What is this car! Something must be wrong!" even driven off couldn't tell what gear it was in and unreliable steering response the 15 minutes drive to home was felt like lot longer drive. Not to mention Of course that Wildman couldn't figure out how to put gear in reverse. That's right, it was first day for Wildman to drive VW! Since then Wildman doesn't go along with VWs and get involved in troubles. That day finishing up the sign and got back to the MOONEYES Shop in MOTOMACHI but driving VWs was very tiring and to tell the truth Wildman didn't want to drive VWs for a while.
After getting hired as MOONEYES Staff, Wildman had many occasion to drive this VW but the worst in the memory was on the way to Bug Sunday in 1992. Back then MOONEYES went every year to this event in Kobe the west side of Japan, and that year it was Wildman's turn to go in 1974 VW Delivery van from Goshoyma Studio to Kobe. The Chevy Transporter which is now in MOONEYES USA with just finished Type III "Surf Square" (nice to remember) was on top and traveled 375 miles one way of hard driving had started.
After getting on TOMEI Freeway to west bound, a strange striking sound was heard. Right after that a crack in center of front windshield and next thing Wildman know was the broken front windshield crumbled in to small pieces and falling inside to the floor. "What had happened now!!??" Wildman try to think what happened but since it was like riding motorcycle without helmet, the strong wind blow made Wildman unable to open his eyes. So Wildman had to park car on side and figure out what to do. Transporter was driving in front so they went without noticing and Wildman was alone (No cell phone back then). "This is something I wasn't expecting. May be I should at least clean up all broken glass inside." so Wildman's clean up at side of high way started. After clean up was done, since nobody appeared for help Wildman decided to run anyway, flasher on and slowly started to drive on side of highway. Wildman was driving slowly in beginning like 40 miles per hour but It was too dangerous to drive slowly on highway. After getting used to driving with no windows, Wildman drove out of shoulder of road back on highway and Accelerated to 50 miles per hour. Wildman's wild drive begun as man gets stronger when he Couldn't be bothered about no windows, "May be this is how It is like driving a Duce Roadster?" so wild as Wildman gets. 20 miles after the accident, the first Service Area (Rest Area) appeared and went straight in. There was MOONEYES Transporter, so as every one was waiting there but soon they were surprised to notice the missing windows and every one was laughing. It wasn't hard to figure out that it was not possible to drive 300 miles without window to Kobe west side, so the brand new Show Car Type III "Surf Square" was unloaded and Type II Delivery Van was rolled on to Transporter. The strange combination style to go to Kobe, so that's the old story about sad memory of "Accident of Type II Broken glass like a Roadster".
Wildman meets more troubles on company car VW so that alone can be long like a novel. Which we should be happy to hear sometime later (Wildman does not hate VW, just not getting along well). Anyway this Yellow ’74 Type II with Our logos is still running the 33 years old body in city of Yokohama. It is living witness so when you see it please take look with knowing this and more heart warming story behind it (Very popular to kinder garden kids, they always wave their hands).
